# Set up Stripe dunning without losing the customer

Stripe gives you the mechanics of dunning and leaves the policy to you. What Stripe cannot decide is how long a customer keeps access, and what you do when the card works but the customer does not come back.

## Pick the retry behaviour before the copy

A failed subscription invoice enters a retry process. Stripe can choose the timing with Smart Retries, or you can define a fixed schedule. A longer window recovers more money and leaves more accounts in a broken state for longer — decide it deliberately.

## Decide what Stripe sends and what you send

Stripe can send its own failed-payment and card-update emails, linking to a Stripe-hosted card update page. Write your own only for context — and if you take over the email, take over the whole job, on your own domain, with a working update link.

## The grace period is your policy

Cut access immediately and you punish a customer whose bank declined a legitimate charge. Keep access forever and the subscription becomes free. State the window in the email and in the app.

## Measure recovery where the customer answers

A recovered invoice is a billing event, not a saved customer. The MorePaying widget asks "what stopped you from finishing payment?" while the failure is still on screen, and attaches the answer to the blocked amount.

## FAQ

- **Where do I configure Stripe dunning?** In the billing settings for subscriptions and invoices in the Stripe Dashboard, where the retry schedule and recovery emails live.
- **Does Stripe send dunning emails automatically?** It can, and you can change or disable them. If you disable them, you own the notice and the card-update path.
- **Should dunning emails come from my domain?** Yes, if you want the reply, deliverability, and branding to be yours.
